The Quest for Joy:

Most of the books of the Bible are part of a large narrative: God the Creator, humans his representatives, human rebellion against God, broken and cursed creation, God the Savior Jesus to redeem and restore what is lost, forgiveness and restoration for those who put their faith in God’s Son. Ecclesiastes is a book that says, “Let’s pretend for a moment, that we don’t know that storyline, and let’s try to see what we can find.”

In this sense, the book of Ecclesiastes is written like an experiment exploring what life is like if reality is only what is “under the sun,” with no God. For those who aren’t Christians yet, this is your reality. But Christians can also lose sight of the narrative, looking for satisfaction in something other than the cross of Christ.

Three themes in Ecclesiastes will encourage us to live lives in the narrative of the Bible: you can’t control the future, none of our human efforts will produce anything lasting, and God’s joy is a gift. Join us on this challenging journey!
